Approved Document T: Toilet accommodation

Statutory guidance · England-focused reference · Editorial source review:

Part T concerns toilet accommodation in applicable new non-dwellings and material changes of use. It is not a dwelling standard. Layouts and facilities need to be considered alongside accessibility and sanitary provision; a drawing that appears to fit cubicles does not by itself show that all applicable requirements are satisfied.

Independent explanation, not an official approval or project-specific legal/design advice.

Keep these records

  • Toilet strategy and coordinated layouts
  • Relevant scope/exemption and design decisions
  • Installation and change records

Common mistakes

  • Treating Part T as the rule for bathrooms inside dwellings.
  • Assuming compliance with T alone settles access and sanitary-provision requirements.

When to get specialist help

Obtain competent design and access advice if scope, exemptions or the layout strategy are uncertain. Use the actual official tables, not a reconstructed third-party copy.

About this library

Independent, plain-English reference notes by Saeed Azarshab. The library covers the 42 subjects listed here; it is not every law affecting construction, an official government publication or a project-specific compliance decision. Building Regulations, Approved Documents, workplace safety duties and planning permissions have different roles.

Editorial source review: . Check the current official text, commencement dates, outstanding amendments and transitional arrangements before relying on a requirement. Publication date is not necessarily the date a rule applies. A relevant competent professional or authority must resolve project-specific questions.
